Things to See & Do in the Bay of Kotor

Follow the links below or scroll further down the page for details on some of the many interesting tourist attractions in the Bay of Kotor:

Sveti Stefan

The Sveti Stefan peninsula is acknowledged as one of nature's most brilliant gifts to the country of Montenegro. According to local legend, a tribe by the name of Pastrovici built their homes on the peninsula in the 15th century with some captured Turkish treasure. Modern day Sveti Stefan offers a range of hotels, villas and apartments, all with glorious views of the sea. The peninsula has a diverse cultural and historical heritage left by Sveti Stefan's original residents. On both sides of the isthmus are two gorgeous beaches with reddish coloured sand.

Durmitor National Park

Originally created by glaciers, the Durmitor National Park is stunningly beautiful and has a myriad network of underground streams and rivers. The park is home to the Tara River Canyon, the deepest gorge in all of Europe, where thick pine forests and lakes provide the perfect home to a large variety of local flora.

Durmitor National Park is a great place to visit in both winter and summer, as each season offers a unique glimpse of the mountains and lakes. The park is spread over 39,000 ha, of which 20,000 ha has been under UNESCO protection since the year 1980. The Balkans highest city, Zabljak, which is located at a height of 1456 m, is located in this region, and has twenty-three mountain tops over 2300 m high surrounding it.

Durmitor has 17 glacial lakes that are referred to as ‘mountain eyes' in the local area. The most famous of these is the Black Lake, which is covered with a layer of crystals and ice in the winter, but is the perfect place for swimming in the summer. Other spectacular lakes in the region are Barno, Zmijinje, Vrazje, Riblje, and Modro.

The highest peak of Montenegro, Bobotov Kuk, at a height of 2523 m, is also located here.

The Tara Canyon

Stretching for 82 km, the Tara canyon is the second longest in the world and is 1300 m deep in some sections. The incredible scenery at Tara Canyon is complete with gorges, whirlpools, chasms, rocky formations, and forests that are many centuries old. Whether you plan to raft down the Tara River, spend a night in the midst of nature, or taste the local Montenegrin cuisine, you will realise that the world's best theme park attractions are no match for what nature has created in Montenegro.

Skadar Lake

As the largest lake in the Balkans, the Skadar Lake is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, and is also a significant habitat for water birds. With an average depth of 6m, the lake has some sections that are as deep as 60 m, which are referred to as ‘oka'. Skadar Lake's shores are picturesque and have many swamps, which are home to a vast collection of local fauna and flora.

There are several small islands in the lake called Goricas that are covered with wild pomegranate laurel and ivy. The lake has a rich history, with many cultural and historical monuments spread out across the park. The park's emblem is the rare curly pelican. The Ramasar convention of 1996 included Skadar Lake's swamps in its World list.

The Ostrag Monastery

Strikingly located high up on the rock of Ostroska Greda and against a vertical backdrop, the monastery of Ostrog offers a spectacular view of the Bjelopavlici Plains below. Vasilije, Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina, founded Ostrog monastery in the 17th century. He died at the monastery in 1671 and was proclaimed a saint and a wonder worker a few years after his death. His body was enshrined in the cave-church's reliquary and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God to the Temple. Today, the monastery is a very popular pilgrimage centre in Montenegro. After a fire destroyed much of the original complex in the early 1920s, it was reconstructed between 1923 and 1926. Both of the original cave-churches were not damaged and remain the central part of the monument. The Church of the Presentation has frescoes that were added in the late 17th century. In another church devoted to the Holy Cross, located in a cave at the upper level, the frescoes were done by a Master Radul, who painted directly on the rock and coped beautifully with all of the natural contours of the cave. Monastic residences are located all around the church and along with the main church form a wonderful place to stay, with beautiful scenery in every direction.

This orthodox monastery at Ostrog is the most visited monastery in the Balkans and receives visitors from all across the world. The monastery represents the three religions of Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim, as it is believed that Saint Vasilije Ostroski's enshrined body makes miracles happen. Many pilgrims have reportedly been cured or have had their difficulties eased by praying by his body.

The old town of Kotor is located at one end of Boka Kotorska Bay, and is today one of Montenegro's biggest urbane locations in an ancient setting.
