Place of event: Perast
The custom of fasinada has both symbolic and practical meaning. On the 22nd of July, 1452, an icon of the Virgin was found on a small crag in the sea. On that place on the island of Lady of the Rock (Gospa od Skpjela) was built a church. Since then, it has been the unwritten promise of Perast sailors to drop a new rock around the island before every voyage they make. Nowdays, on this day every year, people bring stones in their boats and drop them into the sea around the island. Adding rocks, they celebrate Virgin and reinforce the island which is constantly washed and eroded by the sea.
